Greetings From Your President
I hope everyone is having a great start to the new year! I personally prefer a nice and quick January which it did not disappoint. It was so quick that I didn’t get out to chase any birds or wet any lines.. How about anyone else? I plan to get out on the Ice next weekend if all goes well.
As you know we are ramping up activity on legislative issues and are always looking for input from our members. If you have a specific bill you would like us to comment on please reach out.
We need a few new board members this year. Fresh blood for a new year! Contact myself or Jeff Olson and we will get you on board.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR NEW INPUT FROM OUR MEMBERS!!
A huge thanks to those who attended our legislative lunch last month. Taffy Howard, Tim Goodwin, Amber Hulse, Helene Duhamel, Steve Duffy, Heather Baxter, Nicole Uhre-Balk, John Carley and Curt Voight. A great turn out with great discussions. Please thank them for attending when you contact them in the next two months on the many issues we will be lobbying about. The list is getting quite a bit bigger every day. We are now tracking 10 bills with plenty more to come I am sure. The guides and outfitter bill has not yet been dropped as of today and there is rumor that we may see a bill that will force science to be factor in the bounty system currently in place. As you more a may not know, there is no data on where the animals are trapped or if it is affecting small game populations at all. A little research and data could go a long way. The latest figure I have is that the program has cost $4,338,664 so far. It would nice to have some proof that we are getting our bang for our buck on this huge expense.
At our meeting this month we will review all the bills in Pierre that deal with sportsmen issues. It will also be a club "business" meeting. It is that time of year for elections. Remember the rule, you can not step down unless you have acquired a replacement.
PLEASE bring a check to our next meeting if you have not yet paid your membership or go to our web page and pay online. We are in need of funding as we have not had any sort of fundraiser in the last two years. That being said, we will be holding the HUNT FILM tour this year at the Elks Theatre, looking at sometime in October. Doors open at 6:30, films start at 7:00pm. Money raised goes to send kids to the SD Wildlife Federation Camp, SD Youth Hunting Adventures and SD Sportsmen Against Hunger.
BLACK HILLS SPORTSHOW Feb 14-16 Our club and the SD Wildlife Federation will be hosting a booth this year. We need volunteers to work the booth. It is great opportunity to let people know who we are and to sell memberships. Please contact Dana Rodgers to sigh up Dana@sdwf.org or 605-415-8443
Elections for the BHSC board of directors will be at the Feb meeting. PLEASE let me know if you or someone you know may be interested. It has been a long time since we have had anyone new on the board. It is time for some fresh ideas. Any of our new members interested, if so please call me at 605-393-5225

Bill Clayton and his wife
My wife and I were lucky enough to draw 2 of the only 50 tags in our favorite Antelope unit this year. I was expecting a tough hunt with numbers down so low! Missed the opener and got up there on that Thursday with Dave Stroh as my observer. Found an unmolested herd standing just inside the BLM fence and made an easy 230 yard shot on my goat at 7:46 am. Went back the next morning with my vegan, hunter wife, really not expecting to find another Antelope. Saw a 5” buck right away, but he ran off. We drove into the BLM parcel, parked and made a big circle. As we were completing our sweep and using some high ground and rocks for cover, we spotted a decent buck that had moved in with the herd we had seen earlier. Virginia had not shot any rifle for at least 3 years, but we got her situated prone on the bipod. With great cover, we had plenty of time. I talked her through the shot, and she made it count at 463 yards – her longest shot to date! We were done at 8:47 am! Rifle is a Remington 700 Youth Model in 7mm-08 with a $150 Cabela’s scope! She shoots it like a pro! No 6.5 Creedmoor in either of our futures! Proud husband!
