BLACK HILLS SPORTSMEN CLUB The Newsletter of the Black Hills Sportsmen and Sportswomen Mission Statement: To promote the conservation, sound management, and sustainable use of wildlife and wildlife habitat and to protect the privilege of sportsmen to hunt and fish through advocacy and education.
Greetings From Your President
Send us your hunting Pictures. We need to spice up the photos section. And the heat is on! Happy August everybody it’s that time of year when weather strikes and all the bikes arrive. I hope everyone was able to get out when the weather wasn’t so warmish? It looks like blistering heat for this foreseeable future. Did everyone get their antelope and leftover deer applications in? We’re going to need more help with public comments on the nonresident Black Hills turkey tag petition. We started to make some headway with the GFP and the commission, but there’s still more work to be done. Please write in your comments with your opinions on nonresident Black Hills, turkey hunters. I want to thank Jeff Olson, Dana Rodgers and Zach Hunke from the SDWF in planning our upcoming banquet. They have quite a great schedule lined up and I hope to see everyone there. WE ARE LOOKING FOR NEW INPUT FROM OUR MEMBERS!!
What a great presentation last week. We all should be excited for new direction of the SDWF. Thanks Dana for taking the lead in getting our local sportsmen more represented in the state. Next month we will hear a presentation on the Pactola Basin. There are very few fish left in a once thriving fishery. What has happened and what can we do to fix it? NOTICE: Sept 5th 1PM Outdoor Campus West Rapid City Open forum and comment time for the SD Game and Fish Commission meeting Very Very important to attend in person to comment on the Black Hills Turkey proposal. This is our backyard that is getting over run and the commissioners need to hear from many, many of us sportsmen. Please mark this on you calendar. Almost 70% of the turkeys shot in the Black Hills this year were take by non-residents. More non-residents purchased unlimited tags than residents. Turkey numbers are down and there are way too many hunters competing for too few birds. Something must change. Chasing turkeys in the hills has no longer been a good experience. I no longer hunt in the Black Hills on public land. We will meet sept 3rd for our monthly meeting and give everyone more details on what to ask for at the commission meeting We have put a lot of time into the web page also. If anyone has input or would like us to add to our webpage please email us at blackhillssportsmenclub@gmail.com ~ Jeff Olson, Treasurer ~South Whitlocks summer pic from Doug Traub
