BLACK HILLS SPORTSMEN CLUB The Newsletter of the Black Hills Sportsmen and Sportswomen Mission Statement: To promote the conservation, sound management, and sustainable use of wildlife and wildlife habitat and to protect the privilege of sportsmen to hunt and fish through advocacy and education.
October 2025
Greetings From Your President
Hey Everyone, Fall's in the air-cool mornings, crisp evenings, and the smell of leaves turning. It's one of my favorite times to get out, and I hope you're getting to enjoy it too. The moisture we got last month helped settle the dust and green up patches here and there. Still wishing for more, but I'll take what we got!
Any nice elk taken yet? My brother has a prairie tag that we have spent several days chasing after so far. No luck as of yet.
Grouse? Doves? Anyone have any hunting stories yet?
GFP News
. The GFP Commission held its September meeting in Rapid City where they made some big changes: mountain lion season dates have been expanded in parts of the Black Hills Fire Protection District. Use of dogs is now allowed in larger units, and hunters in certain areas (including parts of Custer State Park) can now hunt with dogs under new permit rules.
. They've also put forward a proposal changing how Custer State Park handles its buffalo/bison tag allocation-aiming to give more preference to residents in future tag offerings. If you have opinions, this is one we should weigh in on.
. The Commission is scheduled to meet in Lemmon, October 9-10. Good chance to follow what's coming out of that meeting or be ready to provide public comment.
. Pheasant Season kicks off mid-October (around the third Saturday).
If you haven't renewed your membership yet, now's a great time. As always, bringing a friend or two helps us stay strong and make sure our voices matter in GFP, local land access issues, and wildlife management. See you at the next meeting

WE ARE LOOKING FOR NEW INPUT FROM OUR MEMBERS!! A big thanks to Josh Haiar for speaking to us last month. Very interesting to hear about South Dakota Searchlight and how they function. They do a great job covering outdoor issues. This month we will hear from Trenton, big game biologist at the GFP. The topic is the State of Big Game. Always a great presentation.
