Greetings From Your President
Hey Everyone,

Hope you’re all doing well and getting out to enjoy some fresh air. We’ve had a mix of decent weather lately with just enough moisture here and there to keep things from getting too dry. Would still be nice to see a little more rain in the forecast, but that’s South Dakota for you.

I also want to send out a big thank-you to everyone who helped out at the Black Hills Sports Show this year. We had a great turnout at the booth, and I really appreciate those of you who volunteered your time to answer questions and represent the club. And to all the folks who stopped by to visit and say hello — thank you as well. We had lots of great conversations, plenty of positive feedback, and even managed to sign up some new members, which is always a big win for us.

On the GFP side of things, there’s always something happening — updated management plans, meetings, and discussions going on about wildlife and habitat across the state. If anything major pops up this month, I’ll be sure to get it into the next letter, but it’s always worth keeping an eye on their public notices if you follow that stuff closely. The club sent a letter to the commission in our approval of raising the elk herd numbers in the Black Hills. It looks like we should have some new members of the commission starting soon. It will be great to get to know them.

If you haven’t renewed your membership yet, now’s a great time. It only takes a minute at https://blackhillssportsmenclub.com, and every renewal helps keep our voice strong. Bring a buddy too — more members means more impact.

That’s all for now. Stay warm, stay safe, and we’ll see you at the next luncheon.

Meet our new administrative and communications assistant

Hey everyone! My name is KayCee Smith. I am a Naturalist for Game, Fish and Parks at the Outdoor Campus West. I started with the BH Sportsmen Club in February. I’ll be working on membership lists, newsletters, website design, and some communication efforts. I’m really looking forward to meeting folks and keeping everyone in touch effectively. I, like most of you, love to hunt, fish, hike, camp, and be on the water when I’m not working. I live in the southern hills and am fortunate to live in one of the best places in the country and love the work I do.

We enjoyed hearing from our former legislator last month. It was refreshing to listen to her approach on lobbying the GFP commission and the legislature. I wish we had more legislators like Jacqueline Sly in Pierre. The crew from the Outdoor campus will be presenting at next meeting.  Always new and cool programs to hear about.

Speaking on legislation, I would say we are fighting to a draw this year. No bad bills have passed but the big bills we supported have failed. You never know however, they are still in session!
