Greetings From Your President

Happy April! Sun is shining, birds are moving back in, and the streams are thawed. I spent last weekend tromping through Rapid Creek chasing trout, what a great feeling in early spring. Maybe I shouldn’t be telling this to everyone… but I’ve heard the walleye bite is on in Pierre. I’ll have to pick a weekend and head over whose ready to go? I already have my Turkey picked out and he is waiting and ready in my usual spot. The upcoming weather is looking great for some turkey time I hope everyone gets a chance to get out and chase down a big ole tom.

I want everyone to know a few of the legislative and commission level issues that the club took a strong stance on this last month. We had both representation in person and written to all legislators involved in the gun range bill SB175 in strong approval for the bill. Do our disappointment this bill did not pass. We had quite a few local legislators that voted against this bill and I urge you to let them know how you feel on this issue.

The BHSC also took strong opposition to the GFP commission proposal to expand the Oahe Dam State Waterfowl Refuge. This proposal would essentially  eliminate hunting from Spring Creek all the way down to Farm Island. As of writing this the Commission meeting schedule has not been posted for April but I’m sure this will be on the schedule.

If any member has a specific sportsman’s related topic you would like us to take a stance on please reach out.

We have a few of you who we need to get renewed, please hope on to the website and finish that up! https://blackhillssportsmenclub.com/

Send us your hunting Pictures. We need to spice up the photos section.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR NEW INPUT FROM OUR MEMBERS!!

---

Last month it was great to hear all the awesome things that are happening with the Club for Boys from our newest member, Maggie Young, This month we will get an update on the rifle range and the elk legislation that got killed on the legislative floor this session. Again, I will be missing, sorry. The big news is that we are back on Rapid Creek Clean up duty. April 23rd we need members to meet at picnic shelter #3 at Canyon Lake Park at 9am. We will be assigned a stretch of stream.   Our club and the Black Hills Fly Fishers will host a BBQ at the same location at 1PM. Please help us with this project, we need lots of help. Bring waders if you have them and the city will provide garbage bags. Lots of things happening the next two months, mark your calendar, attend some of the fundraisers and go hunt a turkey.

We are trying something new.    It is quite easy to use Survey Monkey and I think we use this tool often during the legislative session. PLEASE take the few seconds to complete the surveys (link attached below). You can always go to our website and contact any board member if you want to have further discussion on any of the issues we bring up in the surveys.  There will be links on our website, in our newsletters and on Facebook. Also feel free to contact us on anything you would like to see surveyed.

- Quote of the Month -

I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target, but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature’s way of fang and claw and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. "
